As a creative therapist, I believe using the arts in safe therapeutic spaces allows children, teens, and adults to express and process their stories. Sometimes words can be limiting and intimidating. An alternative to words can be drawing/painting, using gestures, creating a puppet or creating a battlefield in a sandbox, thereby allowing an individual to go deeper and express their world the way they see it, feel it, hear it, or smell it. Calling on individuals to use their full body to express themselves can release more than cognitive stuck points and establish new neuropathways of engagement with self and the world at large.
I am currently completing my Master’s thesis that is centered on theatre being a therapeutic pathway to self-revelation and healing with an emphasis on community witnessing. Sometimes, seeing a story helps us to see ourselves.
My approach is focused on attuning to the individual and following their lead, identifying, and validating their strengths and goals, reflecting their emotions, and hearing their attachment stories.
